ODD has been shown to be comorbid with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in youth also.
These symptom prevalence rates for ODD in children with ASD are comparable to the rates for ODD in non-ASD children referred for child psychiatric outpatient clinic evaluation (Gadow, DeVincent, & Drabick, 2008; Gadow, DeVincent, Pomeroy, & Azizian, 2004).
If the strong anger in ODD is treated effectively, our experi- ence indicates that it may prevent the later development of CDs and assist in the treatment of ADHD, mood disorders, and ASD.
Although ODD significantly increased the risk for CD and ASD in one study, CD conferred a much larger risk for these outcomes.
The criteria for making the diagnosis of ASDs are qualitative impair- ment in social interaction; qualitative impairment in communication; and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
